After centuries of cod fishing in Newfoundland, Granvillais fishermen specialized in shellfish. It was here that professional whelk fishing was officially born. Today, Granville is Europe’s leading exporter of this particularly meaty species. TheSPL des ports de la Manche, manager of the Granville fish auction since January 1, 2021, is organizing the festival in collaboration with theAssociation du Festival des Coquillages et Crustacés de Granville. The whelk, of course, but also the praire, the coquille Saint-Jacques, the amande de mer and the vénus account for 80% of Granville’s landings. When you add to this the thousands of tons ofoysters and bouchot mussels, you can safely say that Granville is the capital of shellfish!
