Sandrine Besnard

Let’s go and meet Sandrine, alias Scaf’ – her artist’s name – a contraction of Sandrine and the beginning of the name of her association for discovering the plastic arts: cAf’Art’nAüm.

To meet

Sandrine

Originally from the Pays d’Auge, Sandrine moved to Rennes for her studies, only to return to Normandy in July 2016, to Jullouville.

I spent my childhood tinkering with wood and aerated concrete, creating all sorts of things in my father’s carpentry workshop. Around the age of 11, I started drawing illustrations for old school books. When I was 13, I was given an old tin of oil paints. My father set up a little studio for me at the bottom of the garden… And that’s where it all began! 5 years of painting and applied arts classes, alongside my secondary school (yes, 5 years of experimental secondary school, to train good level scientists… So they say!)

Then it was off to the art faculty at Rennes 2. It’s hard to find a job when you’re just out of university and have an extra mouth to feed, so I went to nursing school at the CHR, and quickly branched out into art therapy, psychiatry and addictology, until 2010.

Share

the pleasure of creating

In 2010, Sandrine set up cAf’Art’nAüm, an association dedicated to discovering the visual arts.

In 2010, at the age of 38, I realised that I wanted to share the pleasure of creating. The idea of the cAf’Art’nAüm association was an obvious one: an intergenerational place combining social links and access to culture for all: Art classes for toddlers, children, teenagers and adults, events, work with young children, schools and centres for people with disabilities, as well as a meeting place for everyone over a coffee! The association was active from Sept 2010 to June 2023 in Saint-Erblon, and has been present in our beautiful region since October 2017 (currently in Saint-Pair-sur-Mer, but without the café mode!).

The association currently has 84 members.

Scaf'

The artist

Registered with the Maison des Artistes since 2012 under the name Scaf’ (a contraction of Sandrine caf’art’naüm), Sandrine has been fulfilling her potential with her canvases, frescoes, shop windows, Tiffany stained glass and all kinds of other projects. Here are just a few examples: Granville hospital, Jullouville nursing home, Saint-Pair-sur-Mer nursing home, Place du Casino in Jullouville, La Civette in Granville…

The projects

coming soon
  • Christmas window-shopping season is fast approaching! Then there’s Carnival, Fête de la Musique, summer, etc.
  • 5 big fresco projects coming up!
  • Work in schools in Granville, Saint-Pierre-Langers, Saint-Pair-sur-Mer…
  • Day-long introductory courses in Tiffany stained glass, stone sculpture, poetic crafts, mosaics, face-painting workshops, workshops for children during the school holidays and lots more to come throughout the year.
  • And if you see a little red trolley or a Corby’art and a little lady painting, don’t hesitate to stop by!

PS: I’m looking for an exhibition space, because the place where my paintings were exhibited has been sold, so I have a lot less room to move around my studio!
