Ugo Caronwas born in Granville. He recounts how, from an early age, he drew on his exercise books in class. Initially interested in becoming an archaeologist, Ugo went on to post-baccalaureate studies in his chosen field and became a graphic designer and illustrator in Rennes. It was at the age of 19 that he created his first posters. One thing led to another and his career took him to Caen, before returning to his roots in Granville six years ago. A group of childhood friends met up there, and that’s where the story took a new turn. Ugo soon became involved in collective artistic projects with local designers such as Chabert 4, François Leconte and Gildas Leservoisier. Together, they created Energy Man, a drawing-based concert combining music and graphic performance. Then, the need to separate the place where he lives from the place where he works became important. He co-founded Le Demi-Lieu, a shared studio that has become a haven for artists and a breeding ground for cultural events: exhibitions, concerts, stand-up comedy… Le Demi-Lieu lives and breathes art in all its forms.

The world of the periodical Fluide Glacial left its mark on the artist. Wordplay and other literary gymnastics often complement his work. In addition to his skills as a graphic illustrator, Ugo also does lino and wood engravings. The work of which he is most proud is the triptych ‘Collapse’ exhibited in Jersey. This is a work produced using the scratch technique (black ink scratched with a cutter on a sheet of Canson paper) representing the world after human existence. If we had to remember anything about his work, it would be that Ugo Caron evokes a memory or simply makes us laugh or smile.
