Vincent

During the five days of the Granville carnival, there’s a good chance you’ll come across Vincent and his team on board the Pauvres float. No fewer than 90 participants, aged from 6 to 78, parade on this solidarity float, whose mission is to raise funds for a local charity that helps families in difficulty. This year, donations will go to the Épicerie Sociale.

To meet

Vincent

The Char des Pauvres is a Granvillais tradition that began in 1875 to provide an income for women whose husbands had spent 9 months fishing cod in Newfoundland. It was Charles GUILLEBOT who created the float, which ceased to exist in the 1960s before reappearing in 2003 with the LETORT family. Vincent has chaired the Pauvres float for the past 14 years. Every year, the members of the association meet in September to choose the theme, before starting to build the float in the hangar from All Saints’ Day onwards.

“Building the Pauvres float is above all a team effort based on a common theme. This year, we chose the medieval world inspired by the series Kaamelott, with its knights, humour and cult references”, explains Vincent.

A great moment

of emotion

One of the most memorable moments for the Chairman was the departure from the hangar at midday on Sunday:

“We all leave together, it’s an emotional moment and the culmination of several months’ work. “

On Tuesday, during the traditional confetti battle, the Pauvres float plays a key role. Set up on the Cours Jonville, it serves as a storage point and is used to launch the bags of confetti at the start. A new feature this year is that the float will also take part in the children’s cavalcade on Saturday. Driven by the same passion and desire to keep the tradition alive, the members of the Char des Pauvres get together in a spirit of simplicity and conviviality. It’s more than just a float, it’s a real family committed to helping families in need. So don’t forget your coins – they’re all counting on your generosity!
