A relaxing hike

to the sounds of birds

The meeting place is given to you when you register by Sébastien, a passionate ornithologist guide. You’ll meet in Carolles, close to the Falaises and the Vallée du Lude. After introductions, equipped with a plaid in your rucksack, you follow Sébastien first into the undergrowth near your meeting point. He then asks you to sit down. Putting on your mask, you concentrate on Sébastien’s advice on breathing. You open your ears to listen to the sounds around you. The sounds of nature surround you, branches crunching, perhaps the mooing or neighing of nearby livestock. But above all, birdsong. Withornithology never far away, Sébastien explains which species the different sounds you hear belong to.

Communion with the trees

of the Lude Valley

You then stand up, and in a second step, Sébastien takes you close tomajestic trees, some of whose branches at your level offer you hospitality. You enter into communion with him, hoisted up on a branch, and empty yourself. As you continue your walk, you begin to hear the sounds of the sea, which is never far away, and then you approach some oak trees. The latter have the peculiarity, in their proximity to the cliffs, of having relatively short trunks, but their branches multiply, enveloping you almost like a dome… You stay below, listening to and observing the birds hanging from the branches when they’re not hidden by the foliage, in a moment of personal meditation.

Body awareness

and active listening to your sensations

You then reach the GR223 coastal path, and the immensity of the sea stretches out before you. The sound of the waves, coupled with the songs of seabirds, envelops you. You also smell theiodine of the sea and the scent of gorse (you’ll be amazed to discover that gorse smells a lot like coconut), which lines the path, among other essences. Sébastien takes you to the Cabane Vauban, where Mont-Saint-Michel comes into view. Here, you’re invited to sit cross-legged and admire the marvel and its bay, while feeling the wind on your body. With theworld of birds never far away, Sébastien continues to punctuate these moments of disconnection and contemplation with information about the species that fly over you or that you see offshore. As you reach the end of the tour, Sébastien helps you record the different songs heard and the corresponding species. You’ll leave feeling relaxed, and with a new understanding of the world of birds.
