Granville Terre & Mer, the good life outside

Granville Terre et Mer, the good life off the beaten track

The May bank holidays are over and the summer holidays have not yet begun. We love this mid-season period, when you can enjoy Destination Granville Terre & Mer without the crowds. Here are five ideas for getting away from it all… just a stone’s throw from home.

Published on 13 February 2026

Taking your first bath of the year

With all this sunshine and mild temperatures… we’re declaring open season on sea bathing! There’s no need to wait for high tide in the seawater pools of Granville, Saint-Pair-sur-Mer or Donville-les-Bains. Put on your best swimming costume and do a succession of lengths, taking in the panoramic view. With the Chausey archipelago in the distance. And once the sea has risen? Then you’ve got a beach all to yourself!

Savouring moussettes and whelks with your eyes in the water

The mousetail makes spring! This juvenile spider crab, with its fine, almost sweet flesh, is caught between March and June in the Bay of Granville. It can be found as a ‘guest star’ on the shelves of local fishmongers and markets, alongside the unmissable PGI-registered whelk from the Bay of Granville-Chausey. Ultra-local shellfish to enjoy as an aperitif, with a touch of mayo… and with your eyes in the water, in one of the straw huts reopening in Carolles, Kairon, Donville, Coudeville and all along the coast. Seafood with a sea view, what else?

Try cycling... and adopt it!

In May, you can do what you like… by bike! Heritage walks, selfie rides, photo rallies, repair cafés and lots of other activities are on offer throughout Granville Terre & Mer as part of the “May by Bike” campaign. Don’t forget to download the “GéoVélo” app to keep track of all the kilometres you’ve covered. Another idea is to set off on a tour punctuated by “sweet and savoury” refreshment breaks. Three “gourmet walks” to discover: at Le Havre de la Vanlée, the Thar Valley or around the Heritage Village at Cérences.

Visit artists, craftspeople and beekeepers...

Fancy an original outing? Let yourself be inspired by the “Brushes and Forks” and/or “Flavours and Creators” tours (new in 2024) offered by the Tourist Office. On the menu: privileged encounters, in their workshops, with jewellers, ceramists, tile artists, upcycle sculptors… combined with tasting experiences at wine shops, chocolate makers, cheese makers, cider producers… In Carolles, you can become a budding beekeeper with Jacky, who will be revealing the secrets of making his “Good Bay Honey”. There’s a tasting session afterwards! Next visits:“Pinceaux et Fourchettes“, 23 May and 6 June,“Saveurs et Créateurs“, 30 May, 13 and 17 June.

Sliding into Le Havre de la Vanlée

Natural, wild… Le Havre de la Vanlée is a little corner of the world that really deserves your attention! This dune peninsula, where salt meadow sheep roam, egrets, mallards and grey herons nest and glasswort, sea parsley and sea lavender (among others) grow, is also a paradise for surfers. Discover it by paddle or kayak, on your own or on a discovery trip organised by the 8 Milles Nautic water sports centre. A word to the wise: Le Havre de la Vanlée is also a kite-surfing spot.
