In 1392, King Charles VI was declared insane, plunging France into a period of turmoil. In the midst of the Hundred Years' War, while the Franco-English conflict enjoyed an unexpected respite, the king's repeated absences paved the way for violent power struggles. The kingdom was torn between Armagnacs and Burgundians, and suffered a crushing defeat at Azincourt in 1415, before the crown was transferred to the English. Le Grand Embrasement takes us on a musical journey through these tumultuous times, with compositions by Dufay, Briquet, Cardot and others, played on copies of early instruments and interspersed with texts by chroniclers of the period.
