In February 1638, against a difficult backdrop of Spanish encirclement, the Thirty Years' War and the conspiracy of the King's brother, Louis XIII officially placed France under the protection of the Blessed Virgin. After the French Revolution, Louis Philippe abolished the decree once and for all. But in 1988, Cardinal Lustiger reintroduced the procession, and every August 15, the Bishop of Chartres solemnly renews Louis XIII?s vow. At the Musée de Montauban, Ingres' painting on this subject arouses undeniable curiosity. And in our supposedly secular republic, August 15 remains a public holiday. What sense can we make of this consecration today?
