Paris, July 14 1989, just before the fireworks. Félix rubs the strings of a violin in the hope of getting a few coins from a passer-by. Reine, his companion in misfortune, draws his attention to the illuminations on the Tower. Look, Félix, all those lights, it's like an American liner, it's gigantic! The flyboats next to them look like glow-worms! But the bicentenary, the fireworks, the Tower, America? he couldn't care less. But when the first multicolored rockets streak across the skies over Paris, his imagination takes over. Félix offers us his surreal vision of the 1889 Exposition Universelle, where the crowds focus on a new building that's been the talk of the town: Une Girafe au Champ-de-Mars!
