And what followed when the author settled into his Provencal mill: "It was the rabbits who were astonished! For so long had they seen the mill gate closed, the walls and platform overgrown with weeds, they had come to believe that the race of millers was extinct? On the night of my arrival, I'm sure there were about twenty of them sitting in a circle on the platform, warming their paws in the moonlight? Just enough time to open a skylight, and there they were, the bivouac in disarray, and all those little white bottoms scurrying off, tails in the air, into the thicket. I sure hope they come back."
