A hike

like no other

You have an appointment with Laurent Chapdelaine, a sports coach from “Sports Nature de la Baie” and a resident of Jullouville, at sunset on the sea wall. The sun is dipping into the sea and the sky, adorned in shades of orange, is turning inky blue… Laurent will explain the route of the walk to you, having told you beforehand to download an application for a particular stage on the route. Laurent lends you a lantern, lit with a real candle. Then it’s off for a 5km walk… You leave the dyke and head towards the centre of Jullouville. As you walk, the sound of the waves leaves you, while the sounds of the town come to you. The song of birds ready to sleep accompanies you as you stroll through the streets. Laurent shares his anecdotes about the places you pass. You pass the church of Notre-Dame-des-Dunes, whose old stones seem to come back to life in the light of the lanterns, and then head out of town.

Civilisation

to nature

The urban noise fades away. You stop to take in the view from a lookout point, and Laurent guides you through what you’re looking at: the Bouillon pond below, the lights of Granville in the distance. You become aware of this environment that you may already be familiar with, but from a different angle. Then Laurent takes you along a path, this time lit only by your lantern, like your compass. The cool atmosphere of the night envelops you, you walk cautiously and then, at the highest point on the Bouillon plateau, you walk in silence, almost whispering so as not to disturb the stillness of the night. You gradually get used to the darkness. On the small road outside the village, Laurent suggests that you stop. Relaxing, cosmic music disturbs the silence as you launch the application you’ve downloaded and look up at the sky, which by chance might be clear! Curious and impatient to discover the constellations and your zodiac sign, you laugh as you spin around.

An interlude

out of time

Satisfied with your discoveries, you set off again, calm once more with just the sound of your footsteps in the night. Laurent shares an unusual experience with you, the sound of his voice amusing you, and then you arrive at the Cabane Vauban in Jullouville. A breathtaking panorama awaits you: the roofs of Jullouville stretch out before you, the lights of Brittany can also be seen if there’s no mist, the lighthouses of Granville and Chausey flash, and the whole of Granville Bay appears before you, calm and serene in the night. After a moment of contemplation, you enter the Cabane Vauban, restored in 2022. Inside, with the help of your lanterns, you observe the interior and watch through the small window, thinking of the old customs officers of this 17th century guardhouse, observing the smallest parcel of land. The silence is somewhat solemn in this place steeped in history. It’s time to return to civilisation. You walk carefully back down the Chemin du corps de garde, then return to the sleepy streets of Jullouville. You hear the sound of the waves again and a gentle breeze whips across your face. You put down your lanterns and sit down for a few minutes of contemplation and meditation, with the moon and stars as witnesses… You leave relaxed, happy to have taken the time to observe and listen to your surroundings, with the prospect of falling into the arms of Morpheus when you get home.
