“It’s not the man who takes the sea, it’s the sea that takes the man! “. Well, with Emmanuelle Marie, the words of Renaud’s famous song will have to change! Because with her, the sea has taken the woman, ever since she was a little girl.

My brother was destined to go fishing, and I to study… I’m fulfilling a hidden childhood dream.

The granddaughter of a fishmonger, the daughter of a fisherman and a fishmonger, she has been realizing ” her childhood dream ” for the past 5 years: selling the catch of the Petite Laura crew (lobsters and spiders), run by her husband Jérôme, to top chefs, including Alain Ducasse. She used to love fishing for mackerel with her dad on the Videcoq (a buoy off the Granville coast), and went on to make jars. Now she spends her free time at sea, consulting or doing personal research on seasonality and sustainable fishing.

The availability of the resource is a real concern, because stocks are dwindling and species are changing, even though in Granville it’s hyper-regulated.

His finest

fishing souvenir

Her fondest fishing memory took place in autumn 2018. At the time, she was on the large island of Chausey and decided to set sail with her husband. The day looked ordinary, but turned out to be extraordinary. She confides that the light was magical, so she took the opportunity to capture some of the crew. These photos were published in Le Monde!

Pro tip

According to Emmanuelle, the best lobster season is from October to November. Her favorite is grilled with semi-salted butter… and home fries.

The last word

“The day I feel like I’m working, I’ll stop. “
