Visit to the Richard Anacreon Museum of Modern Art
Guided tour - group

Located on the Place de l’Isthme in Granville, the Richard Anacréon Museum of Modern Art is nestled in the ramparts, in the heart of the historic Haute Ville district, with a panoramic view over the seaside town.

Richard Anacréon (1907-1992) was a bookseller and art collector. Born in Granville, in the Haute Ville at 32 rue Saint-Jean, he soon left the corsair town to move to Paris. In 1943, at 22 rue de Seine in the heart of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, he opened the bookshop l’Originale, which became a meeting place for the greatest Parisian artists. Close to Colette, Jean Cocteau, André Derain, Kees Van Dongen, Maurice de Vlaminck, Guillaume Apollinaire and Pierre Mac Orlan, he built up two major collections: a collection of books, mostly first editions, and a collection of twentieth-century fine art, paintings and a few sculptures.

In the 1980s, Richard Anacréon decided to donate his entire collection, comprising around 280 works of art and 550 editions, to his home town, creating an unrivalled collection.
