The start of an adventure

gently

Meet Benoit in Jullouville, in front of the Tourist Information Office. Originally from Avranches, Benoit has always lived in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel between Granville and Cancale. A keen sportsman, he has recently completed several long-distance triathlons, marathons, trails and various hikes in France. It was his combined passion for sport, nature and the Bay that prompted him to set up Baie Trek Aventures, to share his attachment to the area through trekking. A trek is a long-distance adventure hike. Benoit coordinates his departure times with the Nomad 308 bus service, allowing you to get to Jullouville from Granville or Saint-Pair-sur-Mer. After the introductions, with hiking boots on your feet and a rucksack on your back, it’s off! A multi-faceted route awaits you: first you head for the seafront, to discover the seaside resort of Jullouville, its villas and its fine sandy beach, where you might spot a trotter in full training! At this early hour of the morning, you’ve almost got the place to yourself! You then leave the seaside resort for the Bouillon guardhouse, which has been renovated to give you a first glimpse of what the customs officers in charge of combating smuggling in the 19th century might have seen.

Surpassing yourself

and wonder

on the cliffs of Carolles-Champeaux

You leave the GR223 temporarily for the bucolic setting of the Vallée des Peintres, the source of inspiration for many Impressionist painters. The sounds of birds accompany you all the way to the Croix Paqueray on the cliffs of Carolles, from where you can enjoy a panoramic view over the Bay of Granville and the Chausey archipelago. Benoit doesn’t just accompany you, he also answers your questions about the local environment, and shares his anecdotes with you! After contemplation, the real work begins! Here you are on the GR223, also known as the customs path or coastal path. The steep path challenges you. You then arrive in the Vallée et le Port du Lude, where the pebble beach greets you with its calm, with only the sound of the waves and the chirping of seabirds to disturb the silence… After this quick break, you head back up towards the Rocher du Sard, motivated by Benoit. Then you arrive at the Cabane Vauban de Carolles, where the Merveille appears. A contemplative stop, and Mont-Saint-Michel is now with you! As you catch your breath, your eyes are filled with a palette of colours unfolding before you, at high or low tide.

Mont-Saint-Michel

as a compass

But the day is far from over! You resume your walk, with Mont-Saint-Michel and its Bay to guide you, always accompanied by the songs of the birds: indeed, many species inhabit the Bay and the cliffs of Carolles-Champeaux are a real spot for observation, particularly during the autumn, the migration period. In fact, the word “trek” etymologically comes from the word “migration” in Afrikaans. You continue along the cliffs, passing by the Cabane Vauban de Champeaux, the most beautiful kilometre in France according to General Eisenhower. The view from 60 metres up is breathtaking! And you may well be starting to run out of breath, because the effort is there and your thighs are heating up, but you stay focused with Benoit’s support. Then you catch sight of the last Vauban hut at Saint-Jean-Le-Thomas, which marks the end of the cliffs and an imminent respite for you! The landscape before you is now the pretty village with its beach huts, then the Bay and its wild dunes stretching as far as the Bec d’Andaine de Gneêts. You arrive at the Jardin des Dunes for a well-earned break, without losing sight of the Mont and its Bay. With your strength restored, you return to the GR223 towards Genêts, via the wild dunes of Dragey. The scenery changes, but the view doesn’t, as Mont-Saint-Michel still stands watch in the distance. You walk across the sand to the Bec d’Andaine, one of the main departure points for crossings of the Bay. You then pass through the charming village of Genêts, where you are greeted by an entirely different environment: ponds, salt meadows, where cows and sheep graze. The final stage is just around the corner: the Cara-Meuh organic and educational farm! You’re tired, but you’re more satisfied to have reached your goal, with all the superb images of your journey in your mind. You then enjoy a visit to the farm, where you taste their famous caramels, then chat with the farm’s owners and workers – you can even help milk the cows if you’ve got a bit of strength left! You’ll be tempted to buy a few local products from their shop. Benoit takes advantage of these convivial moments to offer you time to chat over a drink and debrief with you about your experience. But the clock is ticking, and the 308 shuttle returning from Mont-Saint-Michel or Avranches will be here soon! You set off again for the very last effort before enjoying a much-needed siesta, with the memories of your day fresh in your mind. Well done, you’ve done it! Next objective: the Bay trek, this time over two days!
